Innovation, passion and attention to detail. These are the best words to describe the work being done by Ashley and Victor Kwong of the Memory & Company Alzheimer’s Health Club.
Jane Teasdale, Martha Miller and Kevin Lopes of Mosaic Home Care Services were invited to take a tour of the Memory & Company Alzheimer’s Health Club at 100 Renfrew Drive, Markham. First impressions were of a place that oozed personality, attention to detail, openness, passion, and above all a welcoming atmosphere for those living with dementia.
“We’re a spa and a private social club that just so happens to be an adult day program. We offer an upscale, private health club, specializing in the health and happiness of people with Alzheimer’s and related dementias, and their Caregivers.
How does this work? Memory & Company is open Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Reserve your set days-of-the-week so that Caregivers can return to work, run errands, reacquaint with friends and hobbies, or simply take a break, one to six days-a-week.
We are also a perfect temporary solution while wait-listed for the Long-Term Care or specialty care home of your choice.”
The facility features a number of special rooms: a music room, allowing members to enjoy music, whether their own, or from selections provided. Another room features a crib, children’s books and toys aimed to spark childhood memories. Should members want to take a nap, there are beds in a Quiet Room. The space is very open, and encourages club members to interact with each other and the staff.
The 11,000 sq.ft., fully accessible health club features an open concept kitchen, theatre, gym/dance studio, hydrotherapy spa, beauty room/salon, private rooms for relaxation and outside services such as massage and physiotherapy, and secured outdoor lounge. Everything has been specifically designed to meet the unique needs of people with Alzheimer’s and related dementias, but in a place anyone would enjoy.
There is also a library, activity rooms, a Potting Room and an outdoor space. The club also allows members to cook and eat as they please. Attention to detail and safety is noteworthy, for example there are sensors sprinkled throughout the kitchen providing a variety monitoring and safety features. The stoves, for example, use induction cooking insuring that member’s won’t burn themselves.
Memory & Company provide a staff to member ratio of 1 to 5 and a nurse on-site to monitor member health and wellbeing. Memory & Company will also have on staff to host its programs which include, dance, and yoga, fitness, baking & cooking amongst other programs.
Each staff member also has a unique, custom designed app to help care for members. Re:Member is an app designed by Memory & Company to care for its members. Each member will have a unique “profile” that will allow staff to help care for each member. Staff can quickly find each member on the app and find out information to help them provide care, like certain triggers, their likes and dislikes, interests etc. Staff can also update member’s profiles to track how members are doing to monitor and changes in behaviour over time. Memory & Company’s attention to detail and innovation extends to its staff.
