For many, having their hair cut, cleaned and primped, can be the greatest medicine of all…

Kimberley Irwin from “Haircuts on Wheels”:

“I’ve had clients who couldn’t see, couldn’t move, couldn’t talk, yet in those moments that I am with them, making them look beautiful…there is an undeniable wave of peacefulness that moves across their face, or a twinkle in their eye that tells me they feel beautiful”.

For some a visit to the hairdressers is an important event on the calendar.   But what if you cannot make it to the hairdresser or barber, or indeed can but for whatever reason prefer to have your hair cut at home?  This is where Kimberley Irwin comes in with her Haircuts on Wheels.

Kimberley has a wonderful mobile hairdressing service which takes her to peoples homes, retirement homes, hospitals and long term care facilities.  She services people of all ages and needs.

Tuesday afternoon Kimberly Irwin from Haircuts on Wheels gave a presentation on her services to our Mosaic Staff.  Our frontline caregivers were also sent a video link of Kimberly demonstrating different hair washing techniques for those who are bedridden or in wheelchairs.

Haircuts on Wheels carefully assesses all new clients for mobility and other needs – service is very particularly important in this niche and her company training emphasises such.  For example making clients feel comfortable is much more important in this area.

When hiring hair dressers for the company, Kimberley also emphasises people who are  adaptable, and for those working with clients with dementia and Alzheimer’s, the relevant experience.

Kimberly and her staff will travel from Scarborough to Mississauga, Brampton to southern York Region and GTA areas.

Several hospitals in the GTA use her services and if you want to find out when Haircuts on Wheels will be visiting a particular hospital please call Kimberly for further information at 416-460-0513.

One of the things she recommends for individuals who are bed ridden is an inflatable tub (which can be seen in her online videos) which costs around $50.00 – this can be bought at Shoppers Home Health or Age Comfort.

Kimberley closed her presentation with the following comments:

“I’ve had clients who couldn’t see, couldn’t move, couldn’t talk yet in those moments that I am with them… making them look beautiful, there is an undeniable wave of peacefulness that moves across their face or a twinkle in their eye that tells me they feel beautiful”.

“If we as caregivers…whether we are personal support workers, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, nurses, family caregivers… if we can keep our loved ones clean and styled, regardless of where they are or aren’t going, regardless of age or condition, we will be giving them the greatest medicine of all…..the touch and feeling of being primped, emotionally, mentally and physically is the greatest medicine of all because it affects all of you.”

Thank you for letting me share my thoughts with you!”
