Over the past few years, you may have noticed a new November trend. You may know of a friend or family member who grow out their moustaches for the month of November and have wondered: Why? This growing trend of men growing the hair on their upper lip is to raise awareness on men’s health issues, such as depression, prostate cancer, and other cancers and to raise money for charities. What is the ultimate goal of Movember? To change the face of men’s health, pun intended.

How it Started

Movember started in Australia in 2003, when Travis Garone and Luke Slattery and 28 other men took the challenge in bring back the moustache back, growing it for a month. The next year, the group did “Movember” again, but this time decided to set a goal: raise funds for prostate cancer. By 2007 the Movember trend came to the U.S and Canada, as well as other countries, having grown from its humble roots in Australia. As social media grew so did the Movember cause, as the trend exploded in 2013 into what it is today. Movember is now a global drive for men and women to get together and raise awareness of men’s health, specifically mental health and prostate cancer.

How to Participate

Now that you have read up on Movember you might want to participate in this great men’s health initiative. Participating is really easy, and really fun! To participate in Movember you can start by being clean shaven on November 1st. If you want to raise funds, you can register on the Movember website. From there just grow and groom your moustache for all 30 days of November. It is encouraged that you take pictures and share your progress with friends and family. Finally raise funds and awareness of men’s health! Read up and share knowledge on men’s mental health and prostate cancer.

Movember is a great opportunity to participate in a fun and worthy cause. This November join the ranks of men (and women) in supporting men’s health. Grow a moustache or help to raise funds and awareness on men’s health. It’s an easy, fun and great way to promote and raise funds for men’s health!
