Embracing Technology..a Post by Kevin Lopes

November 6, 2014 in Uncategorized |

As a 24-year-old in today’s society, technology has always been in my life. Whether it be the latest video game system, the latest high powered PC, or the next new thing in cell phones (or the more modern “smart phones”) my generation has always been bombarded with the latest technological offerings. As a result, adapting and understanding new technologies as they come out has become easier, as newer technologies build on the previous ones.

While learning how to use a new technology may seem intimidating, it shouldn’t be. With time, patience, practice and maybe a helping hand using new technology can be accessible to anyone. Today’s technologies have changed our daily activities, and at the same time have the ability to change people’s lives for the better. With new technological breakthroughs happening on a weekly basis it is important to understand and embrace technology.

With today’s technology it is easier than ever to stay connected to friends and family, and it makes our lives easier on a day-to-day basis. The explosion of social media with sites like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn make it easier for you to see photos and updates on those that you are connected with, whether its friends, family or co-workers.

Applications and programs like Skype allow you to instantly communicate with people online using voice and video chat all over the world. Online you can find companies like Lumosity, which provide cognitive training for the brain through simple brain training exercises. Online shopping has taken over, with online retailers like Amazon, online auction sites like eBay, and classified sites like Kijiji. All of these programs and applications can be easily used on smart phones, and tablets with the interfaces often being user-friendly and easy to access. These technologies have changed our everyday life by allowing us to have information at our fingertips, through our phones, computers and tablets available to us at any time. Technology isn’t only changing the way we talk to friends and family and shop, but it is also helping people by changing their lives completely.

Technology isn’t limited to things that we can use on our tablets and smart phones either, with recent technological breakthroughs are helping to heal people and improve how business’ and services are run. A recent technological and medical breakthrough is helping blind people see again. People who have been paralyzed because of a tragic accident are walking again with the help of technology. Technology is not only helping people overcome disabilities like vision loss and paralysis, but it is also looking to change how health care works. Theranos, a health technology and medical laboratory company, has developed a new, faster, and more effective blood test method. Hospitals may one day use drones to help save lives by providing assistance and equipment faster than ever before. Advancements in technology are helping people with disabilities live more normal lives, and are changing how we do things for the better.

From browsing your friends photos from their recent trip to England, to providing vision to the blind, technology helps to improve our lives and is something that needs to be embraced by everyone, old or young.
